Letters

Between father and son

  • This mural features two letters: one from Richard Bastien to his son and the other from Jeremie Bastien to his father.  I imagined a correspondence between the two men, famous chefs and owners of the Monarque restaurant.  Influenced by their respect for the butterfly and its journey, I composed a visual language essentially inspired by the organic parts of the majestic butterfly body.  Le Monarque is a legacy, a transmission; it is also a correspondence between father and son.

Farewell letter

  • The exploration of writing started with this piece.  In a wish to voice on a last farewell to my deceased father, I handwrote him a letter.  Observing my own gesture, I tried to convey the intention of this writing through visual language (not coded) and by keeping the original format of the letter.  In honor of my father’s love of nature and particularly his affection for wood, I chose walnut.  And I added my favorite medium, clay.  This mural assembles more than one thousand pieces of thrown porcelain.
